Volunteer program HIV/AIDS awarenss

Hiv/Aids Awareness Volunteer : (Minimum 1 Week to 5 Months)

Millions of people in Nepal have been both directly and indirectly affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Women infected with HIV/AIDS have often contended with issues such as mother-to-child transmission of the virus. The responsibility of caring for AIDS patients and orphans is also an issue that has to be addressed. Millions of adults and children have been directly affected by HIV/AIDS through the use of infected drug syringes. HIV/AIDS and drug abuse is a rapidly growing problem in Nepal. Lack of education means school children are not aware that HIV/AIDS can be transmitted through infected syringes, and fail to be taught concepts about HIV prevention and discrimination against people with AIDS.

Many children with HIV are forced to leave their schools and infected women are often abandoned by their husbands. Because of this common stigma, many people avoid being tested and hide their symptoms of AIDS for as long as possible. According to a U.N. study, more than 80% of Nepalese with HIV have not been diagnosed. There are a number of things that can be done in order to reduce the burden of the epidemic among women and adults.

These include promoting and protecting women's human rights, and fostering awareness among women. Adults that are susceptible to drug abuse played a significant role in the widespread transmission of the disease. HFN's approach to the epidemic involves preventing stigmas and educating the Nepalese on HIV awareness. HFN hopes to reduce the spread of HIV through voluntary educational and medical interventions. Volunteers working abroad with the HIV/AIDS awareness program in Nepal will assist with community based education on HIV and AIDS and care intervention programs including visiting with families that may be affected and providing them with the necessary support.
