Our Past Projects and Emergency Relief Programs

Food Relief Program – 2019

In 2019, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Himalayan Foundation Nepal (HFN) launched an emergency food relief program to support families across Nepal. With thousands of people suddenly unemployed and without income, access to basic necessities vanished overnight.

HFN responded swiftly by transporting rice, lentils, oil, and soap from Kathmandu to the lower Himalayan regions to provide urgent aid. This food relief initiative helped hundreds of families survive the lockdown.

Earthquake Relief in Gunsacott – 2015

In April and May 2015, a devastating earthquake struck Nepal. HFN concentrated its earthquake response efforts in the remote village of Gunsacott, Sindhupalchok District — 60 km north of Kathmandu.

Impact:

  • 45 people lost their lives

  • 65 were injured

  • Over 700 families affected

With little access to outside help due to monsoon-damaged roads and poor infrastructure, HFN provided direct support, including:

Relief Materials Distributed:

Hot Water Bottles645 (1 per family)Gifted

🚽 Village Development Program (VDP) – Sanitation & Toilets

After the earthquake, sanitation became a severe issue in Gunsacott and surrounding villages. HFN launched the VDP Initiative to build safe public toilets and restore sanitation infrastructure.

VDP Goals:

  • Build 12 public toilets in Gunsacott

  • Repair the local school toilet

  • Provide one toilet allocation each in Cotgow and Lekharhe villages

  • Each toilet block requires ~$450 USD

  • Village leaders supervise construction

🏫 Rebuilding Education – Help Children Return to School

Due to the destruction of homes and schools, many children were forced to drop out. HFN is actively:

  • Sponsoring 25 children to return to school

  • Supporting students to complete their SLC (School Leaving Certificate)

  • Aiming to expand the Child Sponsorship Program in rural areas

  • Seeking international child sponsors to help cover education, supplies, and uniforms

🏠 Earthquake-Safe Housing Projects

HFN also aims to educate and assist families in constructing earthquake-resistant homes using modern methods like:

  • Corner reinforcements

  • Tie rods

  • Proper foundation design

Each new safe dwelling (1 floor) requires $5,000 USD in funding.

👧 Children’s Activities and Volunteering

HFN welcomes international volunteers to:

  • Assist with children’s activities

  • Help rebuild communities

  • Offer professional or creative skills for local development

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Child Sponsorship & Temporary Housing

HFN is expanding efforts to provide:

  • New temporary housing for displaced families

  • Improved orphanage buildings
